About the Project.

My name is David Grant.  I’m a storyteller, and I’ll be releasing two novels just in time for the holidays.
Picture
The first is a comic adventure called Sick Day.  It follows an assistant manager of a video game store in 1991 who gets ill on Christmas Eve.  He tries to call out, but he’s told if he doesn’t come in, he shouldn’t bother coming back.  Pulling himself out of bed, he falls into a world of crime, drugs, and assassination, all on a day when he’s just struggling to get to work.  It’s fun and funny, filled with surprises and nostalgia in a world influenced by old school gaming, gangsta rap, and action movies.  I can’t wait for you to fall in love with these characters.  It’s kind of Clerks meets Ready Player One.

There is a T for Teen and M for Mature edition of this story.
Picture
Home Street is the spiritual successor to the first story I ever put down on paper.  It’s something I’ve come back to from time-to-time and has been influenced by a lifetime of experiences.  A semi-autobiographical historical fiction, we take a trip down a dark and twisted path toward a Christmas miracle.  Our hero is about to die, and he finds himself wandering the haunted forest of his past.  He comes across a mysterious guide who offers a gift: the opportunity to change a single moment of his life.  Will he choose to save his marriage, his parents’ marriage, or stay with his first love?  Could he have lived his dreams?  And what could he have done to stop what happened in Fallujah?  It’s a book thirty years in the making and could be described as It’s a Wonderful Life meets Inception with a pinch of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

I'm going all out for a hard bound edition of this novel, but it's only going to be made available for a limited time.  If you want it, you have to order it now.
Picture
This preorder campaign will help me realize my dream of being a published author, and if it’s successful, I’ll be able to apply your contributions toward helping my novels find its readers.  In addition to using resources from this effort to advertise online, I want to get my books in libraries and stores across the country.  Even better, your contributions are making it possible for physical copies, e-documents, and audio books to be available all over the world.
Picture
As if releasing my Sick Day and Home Street wasn’t enough excitement, my first film is being released on DVD by the distributor this Halloween.  Toaster is the story of a man trapped between his wants, his needs, and his new talking appliance.  If you’ve never seen it – and there are seven-point-four billion of you that haven’t – I recommend checking it out.  It’s awful.  It’s grand.  It’s not just a first film.  It’s thefirst time any of us ever really picked up a camera, and we made a friggin’ movie.  It’s a whole experience, and I wanted to give all of you the opportunity to pick it up along with the books.
Picture
I’m a “go big or go home” kind of guy, and all of this got me inspired.  This could be an opportunity for people to hear years’ worth of stories that I’ve had the privilege to tell.  I went to my buddy Brian Canini at Drunken Cat Comics and asked him if he’d be interested in publishing a collection of our collaborations.  He came back with 32 pages of the camp classic Home for the Summer, the 9 page story of Roscoe, and the entire run of the American Boy newspaper strip.  They’re my words and Brian’s gorgeous images available for the first time in one volume.
Picture
In addition, some of our bundles also include the opportunity to collect the entire Chalkskin library.

Fresh Donuts
, the first album, was recorded by an enormous group of talented individuals over the course of a whirlwind weekend and was the product of an absolute labor of love.  Included for the first time since its original release six years ago, is the supplemental DVD of behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Picture
After answering the question “Can we make an album?” we decided to raise our own expectations for ourselves and dare to ask “Can we make a truly great one?”  PayDay proves that we can.  While Fresh Donuts was spontaneous and fast, PayDay was nine months of hard labor.  It’s the album that both made and destroyed Chalkskin, and until the release of these books, it was my proudest achievement in life.  Every song on this album is close not only to my heart but to all of our many fans around the world that continue to stream us every day even five years later.
Picture
Still, there’s some Chalkskin that has never had its moment in the spotlight.  We have an hour’s worth of unreleased and under-released materials, both new and old, that I will be making available as a part of this celebration.
Picture
But I’m still not done.  Over the years, I’ve told a lot of stories.  There’ve been web series, sketch comedy shows, short films, music videos, commercials, and interviews with industry luminaries such as William Daniels, Terry Moore, MC Frontalot, and George R.R. Martin.  I’ve come up with some creative options for you to get your hands on all of that.
Picture
Plus, there’s other fun stuff that you can get all with your generous support
Picture
Can I tell you something personal?  I figure that you’ve made it this deep, you’ll probably be receptive.

I’ve been writing and performing since I was seven, and today I turn 38.  Like a lot of artists I know – successful, starving, or both – I feel like I’ve had to spend a lot of my time simply surviving and not enough doing my life’s work.  Every one of these pieces that stands before you came with great personal sacrifice, and it’s my deepest hope that my babies find their way into your hearts.  It would be theanswer to every shooting star, every birthday candle, and every wishbone.

I won’t be there to plan my funeral.  When I die, which I assume will be the saddest day of that half of a week for – like – a dozen people, the decision for what goes on my grave will be made by those who watched me live.  Help me earn the epithet “storyteller.”

Please keep comments civil and on topic.

Thank you!

Unless otherwise requested, this is where I will personally thank each and every one of you for helping me realize my dream.

NOTE: If you're cool with it, I'd like to use a picture for your social media so people can see your brilliant face.  Let me know if that would be an issue for you please.

Picture
Paula, you've been so supportive of this project, starting way back when Sick Day was being piece-milled chapter-by-chapter on the Storytellers blog.  I can't thank you enough for being so awesome (and for raising Rich Prophet!).  May our adventures continue!
Picture
Daniel, I still haven't forgiven myself for forgetting what day it was and missing the opportunity to be the master of ceremonies for your Eagle Scout court of honor.  I'm an idiot!  I just wanted you to know that I wrote a pretty good speech that talked about how nice and honorable and upright you are.  I wish I still had it, but at least I have this opportunity to say, thank you for being my friend, Daniel.  And thank you for being such a great guy.
Picture
I have very fond memories of hanging with you and the other homies back at Dale Terrace Apartments in Kent.  I'm glad we reconnected, and I'm incredibly grateful for your support.  Thank you so much, Joe.
Picture
What can I say?  You're my pappy.  While the father in "Home Street" is nothing like you, your gentle influence is all over the novel.  I can't wait for you to read it!  Thanks for always being there for me.
Picture
Ah, my great old pal, Brian.  I'm excited that our collaborations are making it out there for everyone to read, and I'm extraordinarily grateful for your continued support and inspiration.  We've had some great times, Brian.  Here's to many more in the future.
Picture
Brenda, I've only known you a short time, but you already feel like a part of the family.  I'm incredibly humbled by your love and support.  Thanks for being there for my Uncle Dan, and thanks for being such a positive force in the world.
Picture
I can't think of many people in this world that I love more than The Murdocks, and that's the bald truth.  Ann, you're so bright and kind.  The world could do with more people like you; that's for sure.  Thank you for your support.  I can't wait for you to read these books!  I wrote them with you in mind.
Picture
I've been lucky in life.  Some people don't get a big sister, and the ones that do likely don't have one as great mine.  Elizabeth has always been there for me and has shared many of the moments that have influenced my writing.  I know she'll feel close to some of the material in "Home Street," and I can't wait for her to read it!  Thank you, Elizabeth!
Picture
Ah, Tawny, we've had a storied past, haven't we?  Certain circumstances pushed us apart at the start of a budding friendship, but despite everything, you've always been supportive of my dreams.  Thank you for sharing in this adventure.
Picture
Jamie Joachim.  I know you as Jamie Sumner, the bold and brassy blond that had a California adventure after high school.  I'm sure you're wondering how you had an influence on "Home Street," since I've thanked you in the acknowledgements.  I won't say until you've read the book, because I'm curious if you'll see it there on your own.  We'll certainly have a chat once you've gotten your hands on it.  I'm interested in your thoughts and thankful for your support.
Picture
My beautiful cousin Rebecca coming through.  There's an old expression that says that your cousins are your first best friends.  Due to circumstances, we never got to spend a lot of time together, but the truth is that whenever we are in the same room, the tie that binds us is palpable and real.  Love you, cuz.  I hope you like the book.  :)
Picture
The miracle child, my cousin Nathan and I share a bond besides blood:  We both have theater degrees.  I truly believe that you will have a deep appreciation for the work that perhaps others don't.  In fact, I know you will, especially Home Street.  Hopefully when you read them, you'll see yourself in every role and see what I was trying to accomplish by telling these stories.
Picture
The stereotype of the stuck-up, frigid cheerleading captain isn't true.  Well, at least it wasn't at my high school.  While Bethany was certainly blond and beautiful, she was sweet. . .  and smart!  I was concerned about how she would take the silly cameo she makes in Home Street (not her exactly, but a girl inspired by her with the same name!), so I thought it would be smart to tell her about it.  I was relieved when she saw the humor in it and gave me her blessing.  Can't wait for her to read it in full context.

Will you be next?
